A GLEN Waverley store's generosity will help provide relief for thousands affected by the recent earthquake in China.
The Kingsway Asian supermarket, Glory Mart, used their opening day on June 7 to raise money for the earthquake victims, donating 100 per cent of their day's takings $11,280 to the cause.
Store owner Carmen Chau said she had to extend the store's opening hours for the day because people were queuing out the door.
"We tried to close at six but we were jam packed," Ms Chau said.
"I actually thought we could have raised more if we'd stayed open even later."
Ms Chau, who owns the business with her husband, sister and brother-in-law, said they had come up with the fundraising idea after seeing the devastating images of the earthquake's destruction in Sichuan, China. "We are just lucky to be here and lucky to be able to help," Ms Chau said.
As members of Burwood East's Crossway Baptist Church, the new business owners approached their pastor, Mark Lim, to enlist the community's help in raising the money.
Ms Chau said young members from the church's Vine group volunteered to work for for free on the day and the church's 3000-odd members were encouraged to do their grocery shopping at the store. "There was a big queue outside before we'd even opened."
Pastor Mark said he was extremely proud of Ms Chau and her team for donating such an outstanding amount of money. "The people here are very responsive to others in need," Pastor Mark said.
On the Sunday after the earthquake the church raised almost $12,000 through donations. |
