WA’s top academic student for 2013 is St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls student Katerina Chua.
The Dalkeith teen has been awarded the Beazley Medal for achieving the best all-round results on last year’s WA Certificate of Education exams.
As well as attaining an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 99.95, the highest possible, Katerina also won a general exhibition, a course exhibition for chemistry and certificates of distinction for chemistry, literature, mathematics and physics.
In a first for WA, Katerina’s twin brother Alexander, from Christ Church Grammar School, also achieved an ATAR of 99.95 and was ranked fifth in the State.
Katerina, who was dux of her school last year, achieved scaled marks of 100 per cent in four subjects – chemistry, mathematics 3C/D, music and literature.
She also achieved scores of 98.87 per cent for specialist mathematics and 97.13 per cent for physics.
It is the second year in a row that a St Hilda’s student has scooped the Beazley Medal.
The 17-year-old, who is also a highly-accomplished musician, said her hobbies included watching DVDs from the television series Merlin.
She hopes to study medicine, either at the University of WA or interstate.
The State’s top vocational and education training student was Emma Hay from Georgiana Molloy Anglican School in Busselton.
She was awarded the Beazley Medal for the best results in a vocational program after becoming the first Australian student to complete a Certificate IV in vet nursing before finishing high school.
