Buckley Street backdown: rail evictees win a tax break
July 20, 2010 - 11:07AM
Footscray residents whose homes will be bulldozed to make way for a regional train line in Melbourne's west will be exempt from paying stamp duty on a future home purchase.
Victorian Premier John Brumby was overruled on radio on Tuesday after initially stating that owners subject to compulsory acquisitions would have to pay the tax on their next property.
He corrected himself minutes later after seeking advice.
"I'm happy to report that's the position and so for all of those people when they buy again and they purchase again there's no stamp duty payable," Mr Brumby told 3AW.
"So they'll be happy and I stand corrected. I didn't know that that was the case, so that's a good outcome."
Up to 26 homes and 84 businesses, mostly in and around Buckley Street, face acquisition to make way for a dedicated country train line.
The line will run from Werribee to Southern Cross Station in the CBD under the government's $4.3 billion regional rail link project.
