University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis congratulated the 2007 Melbourne Scholars on their outstanding VCE results and welcomed them to the University which, he pointed out, is held in high esteem – nationally and internationally – for the excellence of its teaching and research.
“At Melbourne the Scholarship winners are joining a superb international community of scholars. They will have first-rate opportunities to excel in their chosen fields of study and also to develop a range of important life skills through the University’s ‘Melbourne Experience’.”
Over the next two months the University will also award 200 students Melbourne Access Scholarships through Access Melbourne, a program addressing academic, social, and financial barriers faced by students who might have found it difficult to take up places at Melbourne
One hundred Access Melbourne Scholarships will be awarded this week and a further 100 will be awarded in January.
The first recipients of the University’s 100 new drought relief scholarships fund will also be announced this week.
The scholarships are each valued at $5000 to assist regional and rural students whose families have been hit by drought.
All the scholarship winners will join a University of Melbourne academic community that has around 3000 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship winners studying under the Melbourne Scholarships Program, the largest and most comprehensive in Australia.
Scholarships awarded under the program are a recognition of academic achievement and, in many cases, also take access and equity criteria into consideration. They are available for Australian and international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Other University of Melbourne Scholarships – many of which have industry support – reflect the diversity and strength of the University’s partnerships with industry and the wider community and its commitment to playing a leading role in the national and international higher education arena.
In early January 2007, Melbourne National Scholarships will be awarded to interstate Year 12 students and International Baccalaureate graduates. 100 scholarships will be offered to outstanding undergraduate students who undertake an Honours year in 2007.
