Elite schools: boost to selective places
September 25, 2008 - 12:57PM
Fourteen NSW schools will offer an extra 603 selective places for elite public school students.
The state government has finalised the locations of these additional places at comprehensive high schools across NSW, including at Parramatta, Blacktown girls and Blacktown boys high schools in western Sydney.
This year, more than 13,300 students in Year 6 sat the selective entry test, a four per cent increase on last year.
But of these hopefuls, only 3522 student would receive offers for Year 7 at a selective high school.
In Sydney's south west, high schools first earmarked to gain places will include Elizabeth Macarthur, Bonnyrigg, Moorebank and Prairiewood. Karabar High School in the Illawarra has also been confirmed as another site.
The former Premier Morris Iemma first announced the additional places before last year's March state election.
Wyong High School on the Central Coast will not receive the selective school places as proposed in May and has been displaced by Gorokan High School.
South Grafton High School has also missed out on the selective places, with Grafton High School being chosen as the only site in the North Coast region to gain them.
Peel High School has been added to the already flagged Armidale and Duval High Schools in the New England region.
A virtual selective class will be established for the Western NSW region.
NSW Premier Nathan Rees announced the final locations today, saying the new places would be available to new Year 7 students from 2010.
Mr Rees said he was excited about a new "virtual selective class" in western NSW will also provide 30 gifted and talented students in remote and rural areas the ability to be involved in a selective class while remaining at their local school.
In May, a former head of the Department of Education's selective schools unit, Bob Wingrave, said previous selective school places had not been as well planned.
The additional places would water down the selective schools program, but he supported their location in areas such as Armidale and northern NSW.
