VICTORIA University has investigated a merger with La Trobe University.
Although VU now says it has no plans to amalgamate with another university, emails between vice-chancellor Elizabeth Harman and VU council board member Dianne Foggo, viewed by The Age, show a merger was discussed as late as January 30.
In her email, acquired through a freedom of information request, Ms Foggo says: "A senior council member has remarked to me that VU should be aggressively pursuing amalgamations/mergers with La Trobe … I think the issue of campus planning and mergers is one which cannot be ignored and I will probably suggest to you and the chancellor (Justice Frank Vincent) that an in-camera discussion occur at the first retreat."
In reference to a VU decision in October to close its Melton and Sunbury campuses and sack up to 270 staff, Ms Foggo concludes: "I do not think that we have the luxury of not considering the issue just because we have other major items on our agenda, which will take our resources this year."
In her response, much of which has been censored, Professor Harman writes: "It is nonetheless important for VU to be in a strong position, to have got our house in order — regardless of any merger or collaboration discussions."
Friends of VU co-convener Raoul Wainwright said it was disappointing to hear the university management had failed to consult with the community over another major decision.
"Friends of VU oppose any merger proposal for VU. We want a university that is focused exclusively on the needs of Melbourne's west," he said.
"We are gravely concerned that VU has ignored the lessons of the recent past. During the backlash from VU's decision to close the Melton and Sunbury campuses, management was told that they needed to consult with the community over major decisions.
"Yet as late as January 2009, we see that they are involved in secret merger discussions with La Trobe University."
The Age asked to interview Professor Harman and received this statement attributed to her: "Victoria University has no plans to amalgamate with La Trobe University.
"In the fast-changing environment of the higher education and TAFE sectors, the university will continue to explore the best ways to deliver our courses and programs to our students, and we will be working in collaboration with other educational institutions to achieve this, but this does not include amalgamation with any other university."
La Trobe spokesman Mark Pearce said it was the first he had heard of the possible merger.
He said there was an informal suggestion that La Trobe take over VU's facilities in Melton and Sunbury, but it wasn't pursued as La Trobe was busy undergoing significant internal changes. |
