Many handy hints: Amy Pleydon with children Molly, Isla and Wyatt, and Tiana Johannis with her twins Mia and Nathan.

Saving mums pass on secrets

January 17, 2008 12:00am   Article from: Herald Sun

TWO Aussie mums who think nanna knows best are taking their message to the masses.

Passionate parents Amy Pleydon and Tiana Johannis have set up a website, www.savingmum.com.au that has more than 800 lifestyle and money-saving tips.

It's also a bid to turn back the clock and "get back to what our grandmothers did by cutting out all the stuff we don't need," Ms Johannis said.

"We are trying to get back to basics, which is also a great way to save money and help the environment."

Victorian families are under increasing budget pressure as food and petrol prices soar and interest rates look likely to rise further.

Paying off Christmas debts and back-to-school costs are adding to financial stress.

The site has everything from hair-washing tips (get children to wear goggles) to snack recipes (Rice Bubble bars) and play ideas (high chair finger-painting).

Other tips include cleaning baby toys in the dishwasher, making your own non-toxic children's paint, using coffee grounds as compost, and using banana as an exfoliant.

The website, which is free to join, already has notched up more than 1000 members since it was set up in October.

Ms Johannis and Ms Pleydon are Albury mothers with five children between them.

"We found ourselves constantly saying, 'I wish

I had have known that'," Ms Pleydon said.

"And we couldn't find anything that offered the type of practical information we were talking about."

"We realised others could also share their good ideas, and the website was born," Ms Johannis said.

"The ideas are simple, but do really save money.

"By just baking your own snacks in bulk and freezing rather than buying pre-packaged biscuits, you can save around $25 a week," she said.

"Cloth nappies are another great money-saver. It all depends how far you want to go."

这个网站绝对至强!
Baby wipes recipe #1 -save over $5 a week...
You will need:
10 pk of Home Brand kitchen wipes $0.89
An empty wipes container
125mL Cooled boiled water
1 tablespoon Sorbolene cream
A few drops of lavender oil (optional)

Each wipe can be cut into 4 pieces (along folds). So effectively you can make 40 wipes.
Then in your empty wipes container place the folded wipes. Then whisk together the water, oil and Sorbolene and pour over top. Always use within 2-3 days.
This recipe is alcohol and preservative free so your baby's skin will feel the difference.

The cost of some brand baby wipes can be $6.00 for 80, If you double this recipe (to make 80) it will cost just $1.78.
That's saving you $4.22 a week or $219.44 a year!!!

以前想都没想过
不就是乳霜、舒氛油、纯净水和无纺布么

Savings ... Buy groceries on Friday.

Buy on Fridays to save money

May 25, 2008 12:00am Article from: The Sunday Telegraph

FRIDAY is the cheapest day to shop at Australian supermarkets, new research has shown. Shoppers can score hundreds of bargains and slash 20 per cent off their weekly grocery bill by making the end of the working week their main shopping day.

The findings, released by Australia's largest infield marketing firm, The Bailey Group, found Fridays were the best days because retailers rolled out specials for the weekend trade.

Divisional managing director of The Bailey Group Steve Wootten said shoppers could save hundreds of dollars each year if they took advantage of late-week specials.

"Without a doubt, Friday is the best day to get a trolley full of supermarket bargains,'' he said.

Mr Wootten was quick to warn that doing the weekly shop on Fridays did come with a caveat.

Shoppers not only risked having unstocked shelves but busier crowds often meant heightened stress levels.

"It is a risk, because hot specials that start on a Monday might not be there,'' he said.

"Retailers try their best to ensure they have the specials but if demand is higher than their forecast they could run out of stock.''

The week-long study, which was undertaken earlier this year, involved 1300 auditors visiting both major and independent supermarket chains, including Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi.

Other key findings revealed Tuesday morning was the quietest shopping time, while Mondays were the best days to shop for in-demand staples, such as toilet paper and laundry powder, as they were more likely to be on shelves.

Mr Wootten believed shoppers needed to make multiple trips through the week to cut grocery bills.
"We would anticipate that if you pick each of these days to do your shopping and took advantage of those bargains, you would save about 20 per cent on your shopping bill.''

He also added that Thursdays were the best days to visit discount chains, such as Kmart, Target and Big W, as their specials on big-ticket items coincided with pay day.

Woolworths spokesman Luke Schepen denied that Fridays were the cheapest shopping days and instead said customers were "offered great value every day''.

On any given week, Woolworths had 4000 specials in-store and occasionally added another 10 towards the end of the week for frequent shoppers.

Kylie Rogers, of Narara on the Central Coast, said she prefers to shop on Mondays as stores were generally better stocked then.

The mother-of-two currently stocks up on staples as they go on special and hunts around for bargains and said she would look into shopping on Fridays to complement her habits.
