North Ryde Chinese man found dead in bathroom by father
By Lauren Williams

January 14, 2009 09:20am

POLICE are investigating the possible murder of a new homeowner at his North Ryde house, who is believed to have been found by his father.

The 28-year-old Chinese man was found injured in the bathroom, and is believed to have been bludgeoned to death at around 10pm last night.

The man, who owns the home at 1 Parklands Road on the corner of Napier Crescent in North Ryde.

Initial reports of fighting outside the home around the time when he was discovered are now understood to have been shouts and screaming of family friends after his dead body was found.

The weatherboard home was sold late last year to the man, who neighbours say is also husband and father with one daughter.

They were yet to move in but had been conducting extensive renovations to the house.

Neighbours said a white van had been regularly pulling up to the property most days, including last night to continue renovations.

It was also seen outside last night at 9.30pm.

"I just thought they were getting ready to move in," said Mrs Berg who lives opposite the home.

Seven people are all believed to be friends and family of the deceased, aged between 20 and 50.

They were taken from the scene and are currently being interviewed by police.

No arrests have been made so far.

Detective Inspector Ian McNab said interpreters were assisting police investigators to overcome language barriers.

The new owners were residing in a nearby suburb.

Mark and Maria Devera who live opposite the home said they were looking forward to meeting their new neighbours - a young couple with their young daughter - who they saw at auction.

They described several people working on the house at around 9.30pm, but they did not recognise the owner among them.

Mr Devera said: "They were in and out putting things in the tip, pulling up the carpet."

He said the news was a shock in the usually quiet neighbourhood.

"We were wondering when the new owners were moving in so we could go and say Hi, and you know, welcome to the neighbourhood."

Forensics teams are examining the home for clues.

The body was taken to Glebe morgue a short time ago for a post mortem examination.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Body in bathroom: 'older man' quizzed

January 14, 2009 - 1:27PM

Police suspect foul play in the death of a 28-year-old man, whose body was found by his father in the bathroom of their new Sydney home.

Detectives are interviewing "an older man" about the death of the man, who was married with two young children.

The body was in the bathroom of the empty weatherboard house at the corner of Parklands Road and Napier Crescent in North Ryde.

Neighbours said the family, who lived nearby and are believed to be of Chinese background, bought the house at an auction last year and were renovating it. They had not moved in yet.

A second house nearby was cordoned off this morning  as a  team of eight police officers searched the area between the two houses.

Three tenants in a nearby house at Allengrove Crescent said the victim was their landlord.

"Just yesterday he came here and [took] the money," one tenant said.

The young man, who did not want to be named, said the man was going to move into the Parklands Road house with his young family.

"His father said his family would be moving out and [into] the same [suburb]," he said.

A young woman said the victim was a real-estate agent with a prominent Chinese property firm.

"He is very kind and liked talking and he always says hi to us," she said.

A person who lives in the same street as the second home and who did not want to be named, said the victim lived in the house with his father and grandmother.

He described the victim as a quiet and lovely man.

"He was very ambitious. He had lots of things he wanted to achieve," the neighbour said.

"I didn't see any fighting or disagreements with other people."

The neighbour said he had not heard any disruptions at the house.

He said the young man liked to play golf and might have worked in real estate.

A police officer was guarding the second house.

Police arrived at the house where the victim was found just before 10pm yesterday, after reports of a fight.

This morning, Detective Inspector Ian McNab said it was not clear whether the group had been arguing or screaming about the discovery of the man's body.

Seven people, including four men and three women aged between 20 and 50, all of whom were known to the victim, were detained at the house last night and are today providing witness statements to police, Detective Inspector McNab said.

No charges have been laid.

Neighbour Mark Devera said a man aged in his 50s or 60s was handcuffed and taken away in a police paddywagon last night. The others at the house were not handcuffed.

Detective Inspector McNab said no weapons were found at the house, but a police spokesperson said there was blood on the body when it was found.

One resident, Ari Koubouzis, said he heard a commotion.

"I just heard noises, like heaps of screaming and yelling. Then I went for a shower and came out and there were cop cars everywhere," Mr Koubouzis said.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she had seen people at the house over the past two days.

"There's been a white van in the car port of an evening, so I assumed they were getting it ready before moving in," she said.

Mr Koubouzis said a family with three children moved out of the house before Christmas. He said he saw a group of people working inside the house earlier yesterday.

Another resident, Harry, who did not want his surname published, said a family bought the house at an auction in October.

Mr Devera said last night the people at the house appeared to be making last-minute renovations.

"In the last few days there's been trucks and carpet pulling out. They've been taking stuff to the tip," he said.

"Last night they were doing the last few things like finishing painting, the carpets and floorboards."

A report on the man's death is being prepared for the coroner.
