DESPERATE parents are lying about their residential address and even forging documents in a bid to enrol their children in high-flying public comprehensive high schools.
Principals of some of the most successful public secondary schools have told The Daily Telegraph of the pressure they are under from families trying to get their children in the door.
The clamour to enrol in successful public schools follows dramatic advances in academic achievement made by star performers from the government sector such as Willoughby Girls High, Cherrybrook Technology High and Cheltenham Girls High.
HSC data analysed by The Daily Telegraph shows they are out-performing many of the state's private schools charging annual fees of up to $24,000.
Students at Willoughby and Cheltenham in Sydney's north have scored over 90 in more than 20 per cent of HSC exams they have sat, while Cherrybrook's ratio is more than 19 per cent.
HSC Honour Roll: 36page liftout only in today's The Daily Telegraph
The public school charge includes Irrawang High at Raymond Terrace where Hannah Wilson topped the state in senior science, beating competitors from private and public selective schools.
Parramatta High School also produced an equal first-in-state student with Ahmad Sultani taking out the honours in mathematics extension 1.
Principal of Cherrybrook Technology High Gary Johnson said his school - with almost 2000 students the largest in NSW - nurtured a climate of success and placed heavy emphasis on student and teacher improvement.
"We are a fully comprehensive school and we accept any child in our drawing area," he said.
"But some people are telling terrible lies to try to get their kids into the school."
Mr Johnson said some parents had even produced forged electricity bills in a bid to prove they lived in the catchment area.
Selective James Ruse Agricultural High in Sydney's north-west is again the top academic school in the state, while Baulkham Hills High moved up to second.
Sydney Grammar is the highest ranking private school coming eighth on the list, while Ascham dropped from sixth to 19th this year.
From 6am yesterday a record 67,000 HSC students started logging on to the internet or SMS message to receive their results.
Education Minister Verity Firth said the results showed a slight increase in the number of students scoring in the highest two bands for subjects including English, maths, visual arts and hospitality.
"If NSW was a country we would be well above Australia," Ms Firth said.
A record 15,697 students made the Distinguished Achiever List by scoring 90 or more in at least one course. Students making the All Round Excellence List by scoring more than 90 in at least 10 units of study increased to 1196.
More than 7000 students will gain their HSC, a Universities Admissions Index (UAI) and a VET qualification. |
