Source
The Australian Scholarships Group conducted an online education costs snapshot survey among its Member parents during September 2010. There werethree equivalent surveys, covering preschool, primary school and secondary school. In all, there were more than 8,000 survey responses. The survey askedparents to estimate the costs associated with tuition fees and levies, extracurricular activities, clothing, necessities such as books and stationery, travelexpenses and computer costs that they paid for their children in preschool, primary and/or secondary schooling at government, systemic (eg Catholic), andprivate centres and schools.

Indexation
To provide this estimate, 2010 costs are increased at an average growth rate, based on the last 10 years of the relevant Consumer Price Index. Since different types of costs increase at different rates, a different index was used for each cost type.
*Preschool and primary school fees have been indexed by the CPI Preschool and Primary Education Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 5.71%.
#Secondary school fees have been indexed by the CPI Secondary Education Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 6.98%.
1 Extracurricular costs have been indexed by the Sport and other Recreation CPI Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 3.08%.
2 Clothing costs have been indexed by the Children and Infants' Clothing CPI Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 0.45%.
3 Necessities have been indexed by the Books CPI Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 1.37%.
4 Travel costs have been indexed by the Transportation CPI Sub-Index at an average annual rate of 2.53%.
5 Computer costs have been indexed by the Computing CPI Sub-Index at an average annual rate of -5.85%.
NOTE: For primary and secondary school costs, the national average has been calculated from the state data. Because ASG has more Members in Victoria and New South Wales, the national average was weighted to reflect the actual population distribution across Australia rather than the distribution of ASG Members.
These figures are provided as a guide only. ASG cannot guarantee that they will represent the actual costs of education for a particular child. |
