Cuts to fire-fighters and Rescue NSW will put the community safety at risk
The O'Farrell Government's plan to sack up to 300 fire-fighters and close down 30 fire stations is reckless and irresponsible and will put community safety at risk, Opposition Leader John Robertson said today.
"Under Barry O'Farrell, Fire and Rescue NSW will be required to cut $64 million from its budget over four years – a move that will lead to job cuts and station closures across the State," said Mr Robertson.
"There are no excuses for cutting fire-fighters under any circumstances.
"No workers are more frontline than our fire-fighters who run into burning buildings when the rest of us are running out.
"Before the election Barry O'Farrell promised to hire more frontline staff – but instead he is set to sack 300 fire-fighters in a move that will force fire-stations to close their doors.
"The result will be less local knowledge, less fire-fighters and trucks on the road – and a blowout in emergency response times that could prove devastating." |
