MacRob scores top marks seven years running
December 18, 2008
VICTORIA'S selective-entry girls high school has topped the VCE results for the seventh consecutive year, with 42 per cent of study scores at 40 or over.
Students at MacRobertson Girls High School recorded a median VCE study score of 38, with four students achieving the top tertiary entrance ranking score, or ENTER, of 99.95.
But metropolitan private schools dominated the list of top-performing schools, according to data from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority published in The Age today. VCE subjects are marked out of 50, with 30 being the average and a score of more than 40 considered an excellent result.
Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre analysis of the percentage of VCE study scores above 40 showed that Kew-based Ruyton Girls School came a close second to MacRobertson, with 40 per cent of its students achieving a score of more than 40.
It was followed by the only other government school in the top 20, the selective entry boys school Melbourne High, which slipped from second place in 2007 to third in 2008.
Jewish schools performed well, led by Mount Scopus Memorial College, with 34 per cent of its study scores above 40 and a median study score of 37.
Leibler Yavneh College and Yeshivah College both had 32 per cent of their students achieve a score of more than 40.
Independent girls schools also scored well, with Korowa Anglican Girls School, Camberwell Anglican Girls Grammar and Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar all in the top 20.
MacRobertson principal Jane Garvey said it was a relief that the school had retained its state-wide lead and the results were a tribute to the intelligence of her year 12 cohort. "They just work so hard and they really deserve it; the single-sex environment means they are able to relax and concentrate on their studies."
Year 12 student Hannah Gould got a top ENTER score of 99.95, and said the environment at MacRobertson encouraged a passion for learning. "Even though these are smart girls I don't think they would do as well if they weren't at MacRob, we have a (good) relationship with our teachers," Ms Gould said.
She said her friend broke the news of her ENTER score over the phone: "I was in the middle of crossing a busy road in the city, screaming and jumping up and down."
Ballarat and Clarendon College was the only regional school to make it into the top 20, but tiny Kaniva College, a government school in far west Victoria, achieved a result on a par with elite Melbourne schools such as Haileybury College and St Michael's Grammar.
About 19 per cent of Kaniva's 11 year 12 students had a study score of more than 40.
"Country kids sometimes have a very 'she'll be right' attitude but these kids really put their heads down and were motivated," vice-principal Susan Dodson said.
