$72 million injection into East Werribee and Point Cook
Thursday, 02 May 2013
Planning Minister Matthew Guy today committed a $72 million boost to transport and planning infrastructure into the East Werribee and Point Cook area.
“These projects will attract investment, create jobs and services and improve the lives of the residents of these areas,” Mr Guy said.
Mr Guy said this vital infrastructure will give 50,000 prospective workers and 20,000 residents access to integrated regional and state transport networks. Local infrastructure projects for the East Werribee Employment Precinct include:
$16.9 million to begin upgrading Sneydes Road to connect the site with regional arterial road networks and Sneydes Road Freeway interchange;
$9.6 million for the realignment of the Hoppers Lane-Princes Highway intersection to improve safety and provide an attractive area for new business investment;
$3.1 million for phase two environmental site assessments to get the Crown land ready for development;
$2.5 million to identify ways to develop the Crown land for future businesses and jobs; and
$500,000 for development options for the heritage listed farm buildings.
As part of this pre-Budget announcement, work has begun on the $40 million Sneydes Road Interchange that will deliver crucial infrastructure upgrades to the Wyndham growth area.
Mr Guy and Member for Western Metropolitan Andrew Elsbury visited the interchange site in East Werribee today to witness the beginning of geotechnical investigations, which will pave the way for the start of construction.
Mr Guy announced that ground conditions will be examined over the coming weeks as one of the activities to be completed prior to construction of the full diamond interchange, which will feature Melbourne and Geelong bound ramps.
“We need to complete geotechnical work to understand the foundation conditions. The results of these investigations will be used to complete a design for the new bridge,” Mr Guy said.
Mr Guy said the Sneydes Road Interchange would provide unprecedented access to the Princes Freeway, as well as additional entry points to Werribee from the Princes Freeway to spread the load of traffic at the city’s main entry and exit points as well as from Geelong.
“East Werribee is earmarked as a major employment area, already home to key medical, educational and agricultural facilities,” Mr Guy said.
“The Napthine Government is committed to getting on with the job of providing key infrastructure to new outer urban areas, and this $40 million project is meeting that obligation to the community.”
Mr Elsbury said the interchange would provide an important traffic link and drive investment for the Wyndham growth area.
“The project will provide excellent access to the new East Werribee Employment Precinct and encourage development and growth in the area. It will also provide for additional access to the Princes Freeway for existing Werribee residents,” Mr Elsbury said.
Construction is expected to commence in 2014 and the interchange will be open to traffic in 2016.
