House radiation levels 'unacceptable'
Mon Jun 30, 2008 1:15pm AEST ABC News
The head of a New South Wales parliamentary inquiry into uranium contamination in a Sydney street says a preliminary inspection has revealed unacceptable levels of radioactivity.
Independent tests of Nelson Parade in Hunters Hill have found radiation levels 350 times higher than considered safe.
Greens MP Ian Cohen took a Geiger counter along today when his committee inspected the site today.
The owners of number 11 are seeking compensation from the NSW Government, saying they were not told the site was a former uranium processing plant when they bought it in 1989.
Mr Cohen says the inspection confirmed a number of radiation hotspots on a Health Department plan of the area.
"We went down 11, which is private property, and on the corner of 11 they have a radiation dump you might say on what is lot nine and that is obviously too close to the border of 11," he said.
"That site needs to be remediated or dealt with in some way."
"To know the type of site that it is, the position, the fact that it's on the waterfront, the position of the roads and such like is all relevant to having an appreciation of the overall situation and be able to appreciate the witnesses, who could well be local residents," he said.
One of the committee members, Shooters MP Robert Brown, has a personal interest in the inquiry. He says his son lived at number 11 for six months around seven years ago. |
