A look at the main goal threats from Gameweek 1 sees Manchester City dominate – unsurprising, given their second half performance in Monday’s match. Sergio Aguero may have grabbed the headlines in the 4-0 rout but Yaya Toure was unlucky not to find the net, with 9 attempts highlighting his ability to get forward for Roberto Mancini’s side.
Andy Carroll’s 7 shots against Sunderland also served a reminder of his potential ahead of a trip to Arsenal - Luis Suarez had 2 efforts in comparison – and Carroll’s direct threat could upset a Gunners backline disrupted by injury. Seb Larsson’s equaliser at Anfield should fill the Swede with plenty confidence for Sunderland’s derby at home to Newcastle United, while Wayne Rooney extended a strong pre-season with a goal last weekend to face Tottenham in fine fettle.
Ones to watch
Leighton Baines
Top scoring Fantasy defender for last season, Baines returned 5 goals and 11 assists in 2010/11. The Everton left-back kick-starts his season at home to QPR and his marauding runs down the left flank are surely set to trouble Neil Warnock’s side - the Scout is expecting big things from Baines this weekend.
Jose Bosingwa
Andre Villas-Boas is after more width from Chelsea this season and Bosingwa’s adventurous raids appear to have edged him ahead of Branislav Ivanovic for the right-back berth. A home clash with West Brom presents a good opportunity to demonstrate his attacking prowess and cement his starting role.
Scott Sinclair
Top scorer for Swansea last season, Sinclair has the added luxury of spot-kick duties in his locker. A Liberty Stadium showdown with Wigan offers the Swans a chance to bounce back from Monday’s defeat at Man City and Sinclair’s the man most-likely for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Stephane Sessegnon
Sessegnon’s situation is similar to Mauro Formica; classified as a midfielder, he plays just behind Asamoah Gyan in Steve Bruce’s 4-4-1-1. The Black Cats home derby with Newcastle should provide the opportunity to open his scoring account for the season.
Fernando Torres
There was a real hunger to his game at Stoke. Selected ahead of Didier Drogba, Torres was lively throughout and with Andre Villas-Boas looking for a win in his first home match, the Scout reckons El Nino is in the mood to put the Baggies to the sword.
Darren Bent
Alex McLeish will be happy with last week’s point at Fulham. Aston Villa now have two matches in front of their own fans to rack up the points and this weekend sees Blackburn pay a visit to the Midlands. If there’s one man you can rely upon to grab the goals for Villa, it’s Darren Bent. |
