Characteristics of Gifted and Talented Children

Children gain opportunity class placement on the basis of academic merit. The main criteria for determining academic merit are Opportunity Class Placement Test results combined with school assessments. Comments made by parents and principals may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

Some general characteristics of gifted and talented children are listed below. It is important to note that academically gifted and talented children will not necessarily demonstrate all of these characteristics.

A gifted student:  所谓的有才学生特点：

    learns rapidly and quickly grasps new concepts
    has an excellent memory
    is creative or imaginative, e.g. produces many ideas or is highly original
    is independent - may prefer to work alone
    has a keen sense of humour
    may be highly motivated, particularly in self-selected tasks
    has unusual or advanced interests
    demonstrates exceptional critical thinking skills or problem-solving ability
    may have superior leadership and interpersonal skills
    frequently asks in-depth, probing questions
    may demonstrate a high degree of social responsibility or moral reasoning
    possesses a large, advanced vocabulary
    has superior insight and the ability to draw inferences or is intuitive
    is an advanced reader either in English or in the home language.

说是 第一场比较难，第二场好很多。。。

孩子考场的小朋友都高高兴兴地出来，没看见哭娃。。。
然后都同路去了shopping center。。。

考前老师整队，特意告诉大家，那张考试纸没带也没关系。然后就是让孩子们立刻去上厕所。。。

这个老师真好！

老师告知家长，因为考试分上下两场，中间孩子需要上厕所，可能花费较长时间，所以实际结束时间在下半场开考之后才能确认，校门口会有布告通知家长。然后所有家长离校。 最后考试是11：30结束的。

考完了，去图书馆找了一堆的中文书，准备让孩子看英文书的同时，补补中文。

孩子ＯＣ考试结束了，不管结果如何，都是一种尝试，不需要给孩子压力。

一直都没有参加补习班，都是在家自习。 从2年级末刚来到现在快两年了，孩子做了一些习题，是自己的拾遗补缺，也有兴趣所在。

刚来英文基础几乎为0， 于是从最基本的开始阅读，教室里的图画书一一过目，学习基础词汇。
习题： Excel Spelling and vocabulary crosswords book 1 Year 3-6 (总共４个部分，完成了前２个部分)

喜欢数学的儿子完成了上海带来的数学课本和附带的练习册。题目量不多，属于快乐教育的教材
上海小学数学教材　２年级上下册，３年级上下册

为了提高英语，也得益于孩子从小养成的爱看书的习惯，自觉大量阅读了各种小说，图书馆是个很好的资源库。作为家长，尝试提供孩子科学历史类的书籍，孩子也能逐步接受并且开始主动寻找相关书籍。为了提高他的英文水平，也为考ＯＣ做一定的准备，　陆续做了一些ＥＸＣＥＬ的习题。

这些书都不厚，孩子容易接受，每天放学回家都用大约３０分钟的完成一份练习，积少成多，感觉也做了不少。

此外还买了一本但个人不太推荐　　Excel Basic Skills start up Maths Year 4.书很厚，题目字不大，但量很大，孩子做得很无聊，感觉是重复练习，没有挑战性。我也比较没耐性，所以做了几天就停下了。唯一的好处是，这本书的开头有４年级数学知识点总结，可以看看。

考试前，陆续在网上找了一些题目让孩子试了试，应该不超过１０套题目，毕竟不花钱的资源有限嘛。但也达到了了解题型的目的。

后记：
孩子很喜欢数学，已经开始做国内小学４年级的数学习题，每天一份题目，做的很满足。
希望孩子能继续良好的阅读习惯，相信对英文的提高会有很大帮助。作为英文写作很一般的家长，能做的确实不多。只好多多和老师交流，了解孩子的情况，再看看是否有必要为了考中学，到５年级额外补习英文写作吧。

我们家的阅读没停过，每天最起码１个小时，不看不行。经常是上了床还偷偷地看。就怕孩子眼睛愈来愈差。。。

从带班老师的反馈来讲，孩子在班上还干的不错，海量阅读和适量的习题对他很有帮助。起码不到两年功夫，就从一个英语的门外孩子，变成了只要2天就能看完HUNGER GAMES的故事迷。

１０月了，好奇ＯＣ的录取率，找了找网站，据官方意思（如果我理解正确的话），是不是全州２００个孩子里面有一个上ｏｃ的机会？　参加考试的应该不是所有人，以前是不是差不多百里挑一的比例？

Age and School Year

Students qualifying for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2013 will usually be born after 31 December 2001 and before 31 July 2003 and are normally in Year 4 in 2012.

Where students have not reached Year 4 in 2012 and are seeking to accelerate to Year 5 in 2013, the selection committee will contact you or the principal if further information is required. In determining a student's suitability for accelerated progression to a primary school with an opportunity class, selection committees will be guided by the  Policy and Implementation Strategies for the Education of Gifted and Talented Students. (Revised 2004).

Further criteria for accelerated progression are outlined in Guidelines for Accelerated Progression, published by the Board of Studies. This document states on page 21:

"Has the student demonstrated a comprehensive achievement well in advance of the enrolment cohort when performance is assessed against the outcomes for the current curriculum stage?" AND " On a state-wide basis, it is probable that only one in 200 (0.5%) students would be capable of acceleration in all subjects."

大概是，

4年级学生连公校带私立和教会，大概有7-8万人（？-不是很肯定），其中1万多人来报名参加OC考试，最后录取1600个人。

不谢的。
OC的录取比例大致是6：1，精英中学的录取比例是4：1。
