Re: Repeal of Racial Discrimination Act, 18C
Dear xxx,
I’m a member of your constituents. I’m writing to express my deep disappointment and concern on the government’s proposed change to the Racial Discrimination Act, and to urge you to speak on behalf your constituents to oppose to the changes.
I’m absolutely disgusted to learn the government’s plan to repeal Secion 18C in the Act which in its current form protects all races in Australia from being insulted, offended, humiliated or intimidated by other’s racial comments or behaviours. I have every reason to believe, repealing 18C would not only signify a significant backwards on our social policy and legislation, but it would also encourage racism and unfavourable treatment towards people of a different race.
As much as some refuse to believe, Australia has long been a multicultural society where most of us enjoy living with others who are different to us. Despite the fact that xxx has a high percentage of population who speaks English only at home, I have never felt I have been treated any differently because I am Chinese. Without the protection of 18C, I have doubts this will continue. Even for the majority race (i.e. those who are ‘white’), I don’t see any reason why they would want a piece of legislation where ‘insulting, offending or humiliating’ others based on their race should be made lawful.
I would be extremely shameful as an Australia to see Section 18C be repealed. Mr. Xxx I’m sure you would as well, as a proud Member of Parliament representing an electorate with great community harmony. This change will no doubt let your constituents and Australia down by encouraging racial tensions. For this reason, I urge you to stand up for your people and vote it down.
Yours sincerelyo
