NEWS Corp Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from his wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, citing as grounds "that the relationship has broken down irretrievably."
The divorce filing, which comes after 14 years of marriage, is unlikely to jeopardise the Murdoch family's control of News Corp., the media conglomerate whose properties range from Fox News to 20th Century Fox and The Australian.
Nearly all of the Murdoch family's voting stock-a bloc of 38.4% is held through the Murdoch Family Trust, whose beneficiaries are Mr. Murdoch's six children, including his two younger girls by Wendi Murdoch, Grace and Chloe, ages 11 and 9, respectively.
Only the four older children by Mr Murdoch's first two marriages have the right to appoint trustees for the trust, giving them the right to eventually control the stock when the 82-year-old Mr Murdoch dies, according to a person familiar with the situation. Mrs Murdoch, 44, herself isn't a beneficiary of the trust, according to the person. These older children are James, currently deputy chief operating officer of News Corp., and Lachlan, a former company executive who is on the News Corp. board, Elisabeth and Prudence.

Mr Murdoch personally holds another 1 per cent of voting stock through a separate trust, government filings show. It isn't clear whether Mrs Murdoch could seek a claim on that stock as a result of the divorce, although the couple have a prenuptial agreement dating from 1999, said the person.
Grace and Chloe have an interest in a block of nonvoting shares worth $269 million, held through a third trust, the GCM Trust, which is "administered by independent trustees for the benefit" of Mr Murdoch's "minor children," filings show.
Mrs Murdoch didn't immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. A person answering the phone at the Murdochs' Fifth Avenue apartment said she wasn't available.
The divorce filing comes just weeks before News Corp. is due to split into two companies, one holding print media and Australian assets and retaining the News Corp. name and the rest holding film and entertainment assets called 21st Century Fox. The family will effectively control both companies.
News Corp. in recent years was racked by a scandal in its UK tabloid business over accusations of unethical practices in the pursuit of scoops. Mrs Murdoch is remembered for when, at a parliamentary hearing on the scandal in July 2011, she leaped at a protester who lunged at Mr Murdoch with a shaving-cream pie. She hit the assailant with an open-palm slap. Mrs Murdoch's move elicited compliments from members of Parliament, one of whom said to Mr Murdoch when the hearing re-started: "Your wife has a very good left hook."
Mr Murdoch married China-born Deng Wen Di in 1999, shortly after divorcing his second wife, Anna, after 32 years of marriage. Ms Deng, the daughter of a factory director in Guangzhou, China, was an employee for News Corp.'s Star TV unit in Hong Kong.
Mr Murdoch and Ms Deng, 38 years his junior, married in a twilight ceremony aboard his yacht in New York harbour, with all four of Mr Murdoch's children from his first two marriages in attendance.
The couple subsequently had two children - Grace, born in 2001, and Chloe, born in 2003.
Tensions soon erupted between Mr Murdoch and his eldest children over his new wife, their inheritance and the Murdoch family's control of News Corp., according to people familiar with the situation.
Under the terms of Mr Murdoch's divorce from Anna, control of the Murdoch family's stake in News Corp. was to be split between Anna's three children - Elisabeth, Lachlan and James - and Prudence, Mr Murdoch's daughter from his first marriage.
After the birth of his two daughters with Ms Deng, Mr Murdoch explored ways to give them some control of the stake, according to people familiar with the matter. Ultimately, the younger children became beneficiaries of the trust that holds most of the voting stock, but they don't have any right to exercise any control.
After quitting her job at StarTV, Ms Deng continued to play a role at News Corp. after her marriage, acting as a liaison in China and helping identify possible investments. But in recent years, she has pursued a movie career: She made her debut as a producer on "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," a 2011 movie about two footbound children in nineteenth century China. The movie, directed by Wayne Wang, was released by News Corp.'s Fox Searchlight Pictures. Hugh Jackman, who attended the baptism of Ms Deng's daughters in Jordan, made a cameo in the movie.
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" made $1.3 million in domestic box office revenue and $10 million overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.
In 2010, Mr and Mrs Murdoch appeared on the cover of "Hello!" magazine dressed all in white for the baptism of their children. Queen Rania of Jordan, Nicole Kidman, Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, and Google Inc. co-founder Larry Page were in attendance on the banks of the River Jordan.
