Fielding to pass alcopop tax, Medicare levy changes
FAMILY First Senator Steve Fielding has backflipped on his opposition to the alcopop tax and the Medicare levy changes in the wake of the global financial crisis, delivering a $2 billion boost to the budget.
Senator Fielding's surprise move will ensure thousands of middle-income earners get a tax cut under the removal of penalties for people who fail to take out private health insurance.
He announced at a press conference a short time ago he will now pass all the Government's remaining budget measures.
His Senate vote was crucial on the changes because the Coalition remained opposed to the measures in the Senate.
"At this time of economic uncertainty and the massive downturn globally it is paramount that Australia's economic security is the focus of any decision making by the Parliament," Senator Fielding said.
"Family First believes this is a time for shoring up the economy and for the Parliament to work to ensure a strong and stable economy and therefore I will support the remaining budget bills."
The key senator used his numbers earlier this year to scuttle the Government's Medicare changes in the Senate.
But the Government had reached an in-principle deal with the other six senators it needed to pass the Medicare changes - the five Greens and Independent Senator Nick Xenophon - who had called for the new income thresholds for the Medicare levy to be reduced and indexed.
Senator Fielding conceded he remained sceptical that the Alcopops tax would address the problem of binge drinking. He also flagged that he would also introduce legislation to place greater scrutiny on companies issuing “golden parachutes” to failed managers.
"It's insulting to ordinary Australians when we have companies who have enormous financial problems but still issue their managers, who have failed to properly manage these companies, with enormous payouts or `golden parachutes'," Senator Fielding said.
"It's a rort on the system and I will be introducing legislation to stop it."
