维州高考尘埃落定 华裔学生成绩出色 附墨尔本2008年VCE成绩前20名公立中学排行榜

这是我给澳洲第一份简体中文报纸所写的一篇专文，贴在这里和大家分享下。



据12月18日《Herald Sun》报道，2008年维州高中会考各中学的表现最新排名已经揭晓，政府精英女校MacRobertson Girls High School VCE成绩依然出类拔萃，连续七年夺得第一，当然，这所精英女校的学生和另一所精英男校Melbourne High School一样都是经选拔考试入读。

VCE高考成绩按分数评定，最高是50分，30分属于中等，超过40分即代表成绩优异。MacRobertson精英女校参加考试的12年级女生中，积分中位数达到38分，高于40分的尖子生比例高达42％，四名学生的高考排名分（ENTER）成绩达到最高分99.95。

莫纳什大学也在尽力网罗英才，将给获得VCE满分的学生提供全免一切学杂费，外加每年$6000元的助学补贴，每年共计$15000元。上图是已经接受Monash大学奖学金的几名优秀学生。





位于东区的公立女校Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College今年成绩突出，除了两所精英中学，它在所有公立学校中排名第一。这也是近年来VCE的一个特点，女校成绩普遍超过男校及男女混校。2006年，维州VCE成绩排名前15位的中学里有9所属于女校。不过，今年的考试结果也显示，在31名VCE高考状元中，男生仍占优势，共有21名，女生共有10名，其中MacRobertson精英女校占4名，PLC占3名。

墨尔本大学此次给VCE成绩前25名学生提供奖学金，包括在整个大学学习期间，全免学费，每年另发$5000澳元的助学金。其中至少有8名是华裔学生。而莫纳什大学也在尽力网罗英才，将给25名获得VCE满分的学生提供全免一切学杂费，外加每年$6000元的助学补贴，每年共计$15000元。

墨尔本华人聚居区著名的Balwyn High School、Glen Waverley Secondary College以及Box Hill High School表现都还不错，排在公立学校前十位，而另一华人聚居区Mount Waverley Secondary College今年的VCE成绩也更上层楼，排在第11位。

同样位于东区近年华人日渐增多的Vermont，其公立中学Vermont Secondary College也表现出色，排在第7位；East Doncaster Secondary College列第13名，Ringwood Secondary College紧随其后，排在第14名；位于Glen Waverley的另一所公立中学Brentwood Secondary College排在第16位。

不过，从今年的VCE考试结果来看，私立学校的整体表现远远超过公立中学。从高于40分的尖子生比例中就可以看出，除了那两所公立精英中学，私立学校优秀生的比例要比公立中学多得多。

位于墨尔本近城东区Kew的私立女校Ruyton Girls’ School有40％学生VCE高于40分，成绩已经超越选拔入读的精英男校Melbourne High，逼近MacRobertson精英女校，而公立中学里除两所精英中学外排名第二的Balwyn High在全维州所有学校排名中仅获得第38位，还有一所公立的Victorian College of Arts排在第42位。也就是说，排在前50名中学里绝大多数是私立学校。

特别是犹太裔背景的私校继续保持相当优异的成绩，这和其传统上非常重视教育息息相关。此外，近年来私立学校设立高额奖学金吸引尖子生，与公立中学及教会学校争夺优秀生源，这也是私校VCE成绩越来越突出的重要原因。

表现优异的公立学校，如Balwyn High、Box Hill High等也往往设有加强精英班，通过考试择优录取，不受校区限制，这样也吸引了不少优秀学生就读。这些公立中学绝大部分位于近城东部比较富裕的区域。而高考成绩表现最差的公立学校则集中在外环远郊、西区、北区及一些乡村地区。

另据12月9日《The Age》报道，墨尔本的私立学校明年的学费将暴涨，最高升幅达15％，超过通胀率三倍，最高的Geelong Grammar School12年级学生学费高达$28,886元。

这些数据还仅仅是每学年的学费而已，事实上，大多数私校还有各种各样的其它杂费，比如，校服费，书本费，注册费，登记费，按金，自动捐献赞助费，课外活动费、外出露营费、音乐课程费、跨州甚至跨国旅行费、租用手提电脑费用等等。

由于发生全球经济危机，一些收费昂贵的私立学校正流失生源，经济上捉襟见肘的家长们不得不把他们的孩子转往更便宜的私立学校或者免费的公立学校。

主贴“大墨尔本地区2008年VCE成绩前20名公立学校排行榜”的一些说明：

2002年之前，维州各公立、私立和教会学校的VCE成绩是从第一至最后一名进行排名的，后来因排行榜靠后学校感到压力太大并认为该榜单有误导因素而投诉到有关部门。

2002年，维州教育部废除了每年的VCE成绩各校具体排名表，取而代之的是按照字母顺序排列的各校成绩列表。

不过，家长和感兴趣的人士依然可以从几项主要的成绩指标中推算出具体的排行状况。

据2008年12月22日《Waverley Leader》报道，墨尔本东南区Monash City Council辖区内共有16所公立中学，今年有2000多名学生参加了VCE考试。

位于Mulgrave的Wellington Secondary College校长Mary Jo Putrino表示该校有45％中学毕业生的高考排名分（ENTER）获得70以上； Oakleigh的Sacred Heart Girls’ College校长则表示，有三分之一的该校毕业生高考排名分超过90，特别是该校的School captain，Breanna Guterres同学取得99.45的骄人成绩。

Glen Waverley的另一所公立中学Brentwood Secondary College校长则对该校学生的VCE成绩感到非常满意，特别是在经济学与商务管理这两门课上表现尤其突出。有40％的该校毕业生获得高考排名分80以上。

图中的四名学生就是Brentwood Secondary College今年VCE表现最出色的学生，全部是华裔子弟：Esther Wan, David Wang, Joanna Ho和Xi Chen Wang。

FOR more than 2000 students across Monash’s 16 secondary schools, a decade of assessments, tests and assignments have been summed up by one page of numbers - last week’s VCE results.

Mulgrave’s Wellington Secondary College principal Mary Jo Putrino said the school community was delighted with the results, which would provide career pathways for more than 110 year 12 students.

“We had 45 per cent of students with ENTER (a student’s overall score) more than 70, which is a very respectable score and this means that students have options open to them,” Ms Putrino said.

Oakleigh’s Sacred Heart Girls’ College principal Christopher Dalton said almost a third of the year level achieved ENTER scores of more than 90.

“Our school captain, Breanna Guterres, achieved a score of 99.45 and for someone involved in every part of the school it is quite extraordinary,” Mr Dalton said.

Glen Waverley’s Brentwood Secondary College principal Barbara Laidlaw said the school was “extremely thrilled” with strong results, including strong scores in economics and business management.

“It’s fair to say that we are very pleased with results, which showed 40 per cent of students achieving an ENTER score of 80 or better,” Ms Laidlaw said.

让子女上私立学校值得吗？   





私立学校学费年年上涨，送子女上私立学校究竟值不值得？


家住悉尼北岸的JOHN和Stephanie Battaglia夫妇认为让两名子女上私立学校而在财务上作出一些牺牲是值得的。

他们的15岁儿子James已经上St Aloysius' College三年了，12岁的女儿Brigitte也将在明年开始上私立中学。

他们告诫那些希望送子女上私立学校的家长需要做好预算，因为私立学校收费不仅仅是学费一项，其它的隐藏费用还不少，比如校服费、课外活动费和学校基建捐款等，他们单单为儿子每周一小时的吉他课就每年额外支付约$800元。

这对夫妇表示，“这在财务上绝对是一种牺牲。你不得不削减家庭其它方面的支出。比如全家每年两次的度假改为一次，而且在接下来的后半辈子也要不停地工作。”

不过，他们也表示这些付出是值得的，因为私立学校的教学质量高，孩子们还可以学会自尊和尊重他人等价值观。

据2008年1月27日《悉尼晨锋报》报道，Bankwest一项最新调查显示，子女教育费用是澳洲父母沉重的负担，半数送子女就读私立学校的父母感到财务紧张，近12%的家庭孩子教育费用超过其家庭收入的一半。 在送子女入读私立学校和天主教教会学校的父母中，约三分之一要花费超过15%的家庭收入。孩子就读私立学校的近12%家长及就读天主教学校的1.3%家长，需要预备高达一半的工资收入来支付各项学杂费用。在年收入在$7.5~10万元的家庭中，约40%用多达半数的纯收入，支付子女的私立教育学费。

有4%子女就读天主教学校、1.3%子女就读私立学校的家长表示50%~75%的家庭收入用来付学费，53%的私立学校、47%的天主教学校学生家长承认他们的子女教育导致财务困难。

这项调查也消除了人们普遍印象中的一个“神话”，即只有富人送子女到私立学校就读。事实上，在2006年，有超过36.9万名学生入读新州的私立学校，约73.9万名入读该州的公立学校。

送一个孩子入读私立学校的年平均费用为$14,201元，是天主教学校的两倍多。研究报告还发现，私立学校的父母，还需要每年平均额外支付$2300元的校服、课外活动、教科书和文具费用，而天主教学校为1600元，公立学校为1200元。

这项调查指出，教学标准、学科、出色的学术纪录和教学资源，是父母选择私立学校的主要原因。此外，子女长大参加工作后可能存在的人脉网络、社交价值，宗教教育和家长间的社交机会等也是重要考量因素。

Parents bear pain for private schools

HALF the Australian parents who send their children to private school are finding it a financial strain, and one in 10 families spend more than half their take-home pay on their children's education.

Research has also found that about a third of parents who send their children to independent (private) and Catholic schools allocate more than 15percent of their household income to their children's education.

Close to 12percent of parents with children at independent schools, and 1.3percent of Catholic school parents, reserve up to half their income for school fees, the report, commissioned by BankWest, found.

Some parents - Catholic school (4percent) and private (1.3percent) - dedicate between 50 and 75percent of their household income to school fees.

The report said that 53 percent of independent school parents and 47percent of Catholic school parents found paying for their children's education was financially tough.

A BankWest spokeswoman said the survey dispelled the myth that only the well-off were educating their children at private schools. Figures show more than 369,000 students attended private schools in NSW in 2006. About 739,000 students attend public schools.

The report found that the average cost of sending a child to an independent school was $14,201 a year, more than double that of Catholic schools.

It also found that, on average, independent school parents spend an extra $2300 a year on uniforms, extracurricular activities, textbooks and stationery. Parents had to find $1600 for Catholic schools and $1200 for public schools.

Executive director of the Council of Catholic School Parents Danielle Cronin said she was not surprised by the research, and that while Catholic schools tried to keep fees down, they were a strain on some families.

"I think Catholic schools have a very diverse population in terms of socio-economic statistics," she said.

"I believe that Catholic schools probably aren't enrolling financially needy families simply because the fees are prohibitive, even though some of the fees are quite low compared to independent schools."

In the report, parents cited the standard of education, discipline, better academic record and resources as the main reasons for sending their children to private schools.

They also said the better focus on social values, networking opportunities for their children when entering the workforce, religious education and social opportunities for the parents were important.


IT'S WORTH IT

SINGLE parent Louise Dwyer will spend more than 30percent of her take-home pay on her daughter's Catholic school education this year.

Courtenay, 12, will start year 7 at St Mary's, Star of the Sea College, Wollongong this week.

Ms Dwyer estimates she will spend about $10,000 a year, including $5000 in school fees, $1200 on uniforms, $600 for school camp and $2000 for a laptop computer every other year. She recently bought a $7500 computer tutor program for English and maths up to year 12.

The financial burden means things such as holidays are sacrificed.

PLC三名IB满分女生



据2009年1月5日《The Age》报道，与VCE、HSC等一样获得广泛承认的IB文凭考试（International Baccalaureate）结果出炉，私立女校PLC有三名女生获得45分的最高分（相当于VCE 99.95）；另一间私立女校MLC也有三名女生获得满分。维州参加IB考试学生的成绩在全澳名列前茅。

近年来，这个国际文凭考试在澳洲越来越流行，预计在未来两年内，提供该项考试的澳洲中学数量将越来越多。

International Baccalaureate students set to go

IN THE foyer of her school, flanked by nervous classmates and her watchful parents, Rebecca Williams waited.

The Presbyterian Ladies' College student had been awake most of the night and only fell asleep as the birds began their dawn chorus.

Like 628 other International Baccalaureate students in Victoria, Ms Williams had been in limbo over the summer holidays.

While her year 12 colleagues got their VCE results, she spent an anxious Christmas wondering what the future would hold.

Yesterday the 17-year-old was forced to wait a little longer — her envelope was the last in the pile to be handed out. But the wait was worth it.

The teenager's hands shook and she let out a high-pitched scream as the envelope revealed a perfect score of 45, which is equivalent to an ENTER of 99.95.

Her family descended and for a few minutes the PLC foyer was awash with tears, hugs and more shrieks, as it was revealed that three more students, including Elizabeth Reside, 18, and Rachel Yam, 17, also got a top score.

Ms Williams' result means she will study arts/law at the Australian National University in Canberra next year, but she admits she will miss her IB cohort, especially Alison Chong, 18, who has been her best friend since preschool.

"We're quite a tight group and I think there's a stronger sense of community because we do all our subjects together," Ms Williams said.

"The thought of going to uni without them is terrifying."

The IB is an internationally-recognised diploma that is an alternative to the VCE, and in 2008 it was offered at 1857 schools in 131 countries. Diploma students are assessed in six subject areas: first language, second language, humanities, experimental sciences, maths and art.

They also have to complete 150 hours of community, sport and creative work that can include charity work, music or outdoor activities.

The popularity of IB programs has increased, with a 9 per cent rise in the number of Victorian students last year — from 578 in 2007, up to 629.

In November this year, 2136 students in Australasia are expected to sit their IB exams — 15 per cent more than in 2008.

Carey Baptist Grammar student Natasha Dudas, 18, was the IB dux of her school with a perfect score of 45, and she plans to study international management in England because her family are relocating there next year.

She said the international nature of the qualification appealed to her.

"I opened the letter and started crying and my family looked horrified — they thought something terrible had happened," Ms Dudas said.

Three Methodist Ladies' College students got IB scores of 45, and students at other schools offering the IB, including Geelong Grammar, Haileybury, Wesley College, and Kardinia International College, also got their results yesterday.

Australasia has traditionally done well in the IB.

感觉从第9到第18名分数很近了，尤其是平均分，不知道差一分是什么概念
尖子差距5%的话，区别也不大呀，一个年级100人的话，尖子也就多个5个

单看这个排名，好像忽略了很多比如：学校设施、校风、规模、师资等等的东西

有孩子读高中的说说看，尤其是上面维州几个比较热门的学校。
