2009年1月26日是澳洲国庆日，这一天又恰逢中国农历新年的大年初一，这对澳洲华人来说真是“双重喜庆”。

春节作为中华民族的第一大节，是节日体系中的核心大节，持续时间最长、内容最丰富。其蕴涵的辞旧迎新、合家团圆的意义，成为凝聚民族情感的重要力量，也使它成为中华民族自我认同的一个文化符号。中国人庆祝农历新年的历史已经超过3000年，在中国，香港，台湾，新加坡和马来西亚等地，春节是最主要的公共假日，按照传统人们要足足庆祝15天。

除夕全家团聚在一起吃年夜饭、熬夜守岁，是中国人一年一度的文化心结。可是身在海外的华人们往往因为时间不凑巧，而不能“放心大胆”地享受熬夜守岁这种独特的节日传统。

今年在这个法定的假日长周末，农历牛年春节与澳洲国庆日落在了同一天，对身在澳洲的华人同胞来说真是令人欣慰的“大红包”。

据《Herald Sun》报道，春节当天，墨尔本联邦广场将举行中国农历牛年音乐会（Luna Niu concert），“牛”将成为引人注目的角色，狂欢者将携手迎接“牛”年。

盛大的澳洲国庆日鸭子比赛26日也将在Yarra河上进行，第一个冲过线的橡皮鸭的主人将赢得一部新车。

墨尔本澳洲国庆日计划的庆祝活动就达60多个，如升旗典礼、在Kings Domain举行的老爷车展、Docklands的喜剧表演、免费音乐表演和娱乐等等。

这个长周末的活动最后将于晚上9点15分在联邦广场和Yarra河上的焰火燃放中达到高潮。

MELBOURNE'S Australia Day celebrations were launched at Federation Square yesterday with onlookers treated to a taste of events to come.

For the third year in a row, Melbourne's celebrations will stretch through the long weekend, starting on Saturday January 24 and running until the Australia Day public holiday on January 26.

The Chinese deity of prosperity, Chaishen, is just one of the attractions included in the weekend's events, which also offer free family entertainment at Waterfront City, the national BMX championships and the great Australia Day duck race on the Yarra.

On the other side of the world, millions Of Americans will get a visual taste of Australia with a one-hour TV special airing in the US as part of the G'Day USA: Australia Week festival.

The festival, in its sixth year, began on Tuesday in Los Angeles and over the next two weeks will show Australian film stars, fashion, tourism, wine, food and trade in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

The TV special, a documentary promoting Australia, will air repeatedly on America's Independent Film Channel during prime time over coming weeks.

Australia Week includes food promotions in top-tier supermarkets Bristol Farms in Los Angeles, Andronico's Market in San Francisco and the Food Emporium in New York.

WHAT with the dancing dumplings, the smoking ceremonies and the fireworks, it is the cultural calendar clash that is set to unite all Australians in celebration.

For Sydney's Chinese community, next Monday will be doubly significant, as they prepare to observe the start of the Chinese New Year and Australia Day.

Although Chinese New Year is celebrated on a different date each year, these two events have not fallen on the same date since 1933.

The official start of the Year of the Ox will be observed with a colourful parade through Sydney's city streets, while 5000 activities will be staged across NSW as part of Australia Day.

Organisers of both events said they hoped thousands would be involved in the celebrations.

Launching the state's Australia Day program in Sydney yesterday, Michael Egan, chairman of the Australia Day Council of NSW, said it would be a time to observe the nation's rich heritage: "(It's) a day for all Australians to get together and enjoy in whatever way they choose, and celebrate being Australians together."

The Chinese New Year markets will run in Sydney's Belmore Park from January 23 to January 25, with a spectacular twilight parade on Sunday expected to be among the highlights of the weekend.

Parade director Darren Yap said organisers were conscious of the fact that it would be staged on the Australia Day weekend.

"It's kind of apt that Australia Day and Chinese New Year fall around the same time," he said.
