MELBOURNE secondary schools raised their fees more than schools in any other Australian city this year, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Charges in private and government secondary schools in Melbourne jumped 8.7 per cent in the year to the March quarter, compared to a capital city average of 7.6 per cent.
Many Victorian private schools charge more than $20,000 a year for year 12 tuition, while Geelong Grammar charges more than $28,000, including the cost of lunch and dinner and staff remaining on campus until 8.30pm. Lauriston Girls School this year increased its year 12 fees by 14 per cent, to $21,980, and Trinity Grammar increased its year 12 fees by 11 per cent, to $20,140.
Michelle Green, chief executive of the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria, said that fee rises were largely due to increased staffing costs following the pay deal struck between the Victorian Government and government school teachers last May. She said the costs of complying with increasingly complex regulation had also had an impact.
Andrew Blair, the president of the Australian Secondary Principals Association, which represents government secondary schools, said the charges levied by government schools were "moderate" compared with those in the independent sector, but some schools were having to pass on more costs to families because their government funding was inadequate.
Almost a third of Victoria's children are educated at non-government secondary schools, a higher proportion than any other state. Overall, education costs across the nation rose 5 per cent in the year to the March quarter, twice the overall rate of inflation.
Preschool and primary education fees increased by 4.3 per cent, while tertiary education fees rose by 3.2 per cent.
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations said this year's increase was in line with the average increase in education costs in the year to the March quarter, of 5.3 per cent.
