Reconciliation for 4-year-olds

根据联邦政府新的有关规定,曼丽等悉尼北部海滩(Northern Beaches)的preschool可能不得不在校址内悬挂土著旗并邀请相关人士去举办有关活动,以教育孩子们避免种族歧视。

PRESCHOOLS on the northern beaches could be forced to fly the Aboriginal flag and invite elders to speak to under-fives about its importance.

New draft guidelines for childcare workers would see the indigenous flag flown at centres and “persona dolls” being used to teach children about inclusion and racism.

Under the Federal Government’s Early Years Learning Framework, childcare centres would have to “actively seek ways to introduce a spirit of reconciliation into the everyday life of the setting”.

But Opposition community services spokeswoman Pru Goward said it would bring a political debate into children’s lives too early. “Most three-year-olds are still working out where the toilet is,” she told The Manly Daily.

“School is the best place to start doing this, preschool is more about socialisation.

“I have never had complaints about racism in a childcare centre.

“I see no evidence that it’s being driven by a problem.”

Lynda Watton, director of the Owl and the Pussycat Preschool at Brookvale, said the centre already taught children about ethnic diversity and indigenous culture.

They had regular dress ups in costumes from different countries, food from around the world, dolls from various ethnic backgrounds and playtime with instruments including the didgeridoo.

Children at her centre were also exposed to different cultures with international greetings written on the wall - from “bulla”, meaning hello in Fijian, to the Spanish “hola”. “We have Aboriginal music and storybooks,” Ms Watton said. “We have Italian meals and meals with different cultural flavours throughout the whole program.

“We are setting up a kitchen, for instance, an Asian kitchen where they can perhaps learn to make sushi.

“They are children so it’s based at their level.

“We explain where it comes from and what it is.”
