Free ambulance rides for patients

VICTORIAN ambulance patients will not be charged for using the service when paramedics step up their industrial action for 10-hour rest breaks.
Tomorrow and Saturday paramedics across Victoria will refuse to record patient billing information for the first four hours of each shift.
The move is expected to starve Ambulance Victoria of tens of thousands of dollars in revenue.
Ambulance Employees Australia State Secretary Steve McGhie said this latest move was about increasing the pressure on the Government and Ambulance Victoria to find a solution and avoid strike action.
"We still hope strike action can be avoided but paramedics are determined to keep stepping up their campaign until they win proper rest breaks and fair wages," he said.
On Friday morning, paramedics started taking 10-hour rest breaks between shifts, defying Ambulance Victoria's policy of eight-hour breaks.
The move came after intense and extended negotiations between the Ambulance Employees' Association (AEA) and Ambulance Victoria over pay, breaks and conditions failed.
Paramedics have also started defying a media ban and providing briefings to journalists about their campaign. |
