The latest opinion polls has seen support for Labor slipping, withthe coalition getting an early swing that could clinch it power.
AGalaxy poll conducted for the Nine Network in the 24 hours after PrimeMinister Julia Gillard called the election showed Labor's primary votehad dropped to 38 per cent.
The coalition's vote was up to 44 per cent, putting both parties at 50 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.
This represented a 2.7 per cent swing to the coalition, enough to put them in power.
TheSaturday Galaxy poll took the gloss off the results of another Galaxyopinion poll conducted 24 hours earlier, on Friday evening, before theAugust 21 election was called - which showed Labor maintaining atwo-party preferred lead - 52-48% - over the coalition.
But even in that poll, there were worrying signs for Labor.
Its primary vote support dropped two points to 39%, down from 41% in a poll taken last Sunday.
ButJulia Gillard retained a strong lead over opposition leader Tony Abbottas preferred prime minister with a 55% to 32% buffer over her opponent.
Theprime minister is in Brisbane today while Mr Abbott returns to his homecity of Sydney after attending the annual conference of the LiberalNational Party in Queensland.
Election analystsbelieve NSW and Queensland are the battleground states of the electionwith about 15 marginal seats up for grabs.
Ms Gillard has made it clear that Labor’s election pitch will focus on ‘‘moving forward’’.
‘‘I’ll be asking the Australian people for their trust,’’ she said in her first speech of the campaign on Saturday.
Mr Abbott sees the issue of trust in a different light.
‘‘Why should people trust Julia Gillard, when even (former prime minister) Kevin Rudd couldn’t,’’ he said.
Mr Rudd appears to have returned to Australia following a trip to the United States.
His wife, Therese Rein, in a tweet on Sunday morning said she had landed in Sydney.
‘‘Nice to be home,’’ the tweet said, although there was no reference to her husband.
GalaxyCEO David Briggs said the latest poll, which was published in News Ltdnewspapers, made it ‘‘very difficult’’ for the coalition to win theelection.
But Queensland was a problem state forthe government with voters concerned about the way Mr Rudd was toppledby Ms Gillard, he said.
