STEFANIE Jones isn't just the Labor candidate for Cronulla. She is also being used by the ALP to attract more volunteers for the next election.
The glamorous 23-year-old student features in a video email that has been circulated to party faithful, urging them to front up and help out in a campaign in which NSW Labor faces an unprecedented defeat.
Ms Jones, standing for the Liberal-held seat of Cronulla, remains an optimist.
She reckons her youth will be the key to attracting a few extra votes in a seat that has been won by Labor only twice since it was established in 1959.
Ms Jones said the fact retiring incumbent Malcolm Kerr, who had held the seat since 1984, was being replaced by Michael Speakman, an established barrister, gave her a chance to show she was different.
About 35 per cent of Cronulla's residents are under the age of 30.
"I'm certainly not just some dude in a suit," Ms Jones said. "It annoys me that this seat has been a retirement career for someone for the past 26 years. It's just been a Liberal backwater where little has been done."
Ms Jones was approached to run in Cronulla after impressing Labor organisers with her approach to campaigning during last year's federal election.
Ms Jones has been involved with Labor for as long as she can remember.
Her father and grandfather were proud Sutherland Shire members of Labor, and she knows the party needs more young members.
"Young people in Australia are just not becoming involved in politics. If you go to a branch meeting, there's hardly anyone who is under 30," Ms Jones said.
