请在 Woolworths/Safeway shopping at 23rd Jan.
这一天,他们的全部收入都要捐献给受旱灾影响的farmers.
这是我的同事叔叔家的一封信。看到他们居然没有多余的钱去买衣服,让我心里很难过:
Hi Gabby
You might be interested to know that in our Christmas mail we received a gift voucher from the CWA as part of their drought relief. We have been through nine years of below annual rainfall out of the past ten years. We are facing our third year of negative income (the bank has increased our overdraft by hundreds of thousands of dollars in order that we can continue trading - an offense to trade while insolvent) and yet we are better off than many. Please encourage your friends to support Woolworths, irrespective of how you might feel about the shop.
In our small farming community of about 25 families, only one is not eligible for drought assistance, and that is because we are leasing his farm. Two families have their land on the market and our community has lost all the young people, except for Stephen. The drought is affecting everyone in ways which are not financial.
On a financial side, most farm families shop for basic food items only. I shop for clothes when clothes wear out, not when I get tired of them. I go longer between haircuts and we rarely buy alcohol or eat out. I go without rather than go into town for one or two items. And yet as I said before, we are better off that those further north and west. We harvest some crop - about 20% of what we would get in a normal year, whatever that is.
You may wish to forward this email to your friends who might be unsure of whether it is worthwhile shopping at Woolworths FOR ONE DAY ONLY.
Cheers! Irene
