Savings ... Buy groceries on Friday.

Buy on Fridays to save money
May 25, 2008 12:00am Article from: The Sunday Telegraph
FRIDAY is the cheapest day to shop at Australian supermarkets, new research has shown. Shoppers can score hundreds of bargains and slash 20 per cent off their weekly grocery bill by making the end of the working week their main shopping day.
The findings, released by Australia's largest infield marketing firm, The Bailey Group, found Fridays were the best days because retailers rolled out specials for the weekend trade.
Divisional managing director of The Bailey Group Steve Wootten said shoppers could save hundreds of dollars each year if they took advantage of late-week specials.
"Without a doubt, Friday is the best day to get a trolley full of supermarket bargains,'' he said.
Mr Wootten was quick to warn that doing the weekly shop on Fridays did come with a caveat.
Shoppers not only risked having unstocked shelves but busier crowds often meant heightened stress levels.
"It is a risk, because hot specials that start on a Monday might not be there,'' he said.
"Retailers try their best to ensure they have the specials but if demand is higher than their forecast they could run out of stock.''
The week-long study, which was undertaken earlier this year, involved 1300 auditors visiting both major and independent supermarket chains, including Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi.
Other key findings revealed Tuesday morning was the quietest shopping time, while Mondays were the best days to shop for in-demand staples, such as toilet paper and laundry powder, as they were more likely to be on shelves.
Mr Wootten believed shoppers needed to make multiple trips through the week to cut grocery bills.
"We would anticipate that if you pick each of these days to do your shopping and took advantage of those bargains, you would save about 20 per cent on your shopping bill.''
He also added that Thursdays were the best days to visit discount chains, such as Kmart, Target and Big W, as their specials on big-ticket items coincided with pay day.
Woolworths spokesman Luke Schepen denied that Fridays were the cheapest shopping days and instead said customers were "offered great value every day''.
On any given week, Woolworths had 4000 specials in-store and occasionally added another 10 towards the end of the week for frequent shoppers.
Kylie Rogers, of Narara on the Central Coast, said she prefers to shop on Mondays as stores were generally better stocked then.
The mother-of-two currently stocks up on staples as they go on special and hunts around for bargains and said she would look into shopping on Fridays to complement her habits. |
