The Commonwealth Bank  could not reveal today how much money was overdrawn from accounts yesterday using the bank's ATMs.

A technical problem meant all the bank's ATMs were placed into offline mode yesterday. Customers could not access their account balances but could still withdraw money, even more than their accounts held.

As word spread, especially via Twitter, money was taken from more than 40 malfunctioning ATMs and police issued a warning to people not to exploit the situation and take money that was not theirs.

Two young men have since been charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and police warn that more charges will follow if those who took money do not return it.

Bank spokesman Steve Batten said the amount of cash overdrawn from accounts was still being assessed.

''It's too early for us to provide definitive comment about what we would be looking at doing (in terms of prosecutions), " he said. ''We're contacting customers that are overdrawn and talking to them about their accounts.''

Mr Batten said the bank was encouraging anyone who had overdrawn money to contact the Commonwealth Bank to return it.
Batten

He said the fee charged to overdrawn accounts would be refunded to customers.

''A small number of customers have overdrawn accounts intentionally,'' he said. ''Then there's the ones who have legitimately transacted and may have overdrawn.

''The key thing we would say is give us a call and we will talk to you about your account.

''We're hoping customers do the right thing if they have overdrawn by a few hundred.''

Customers who had made deposits through Commonwealth Bank ATMs were not affected by the glitch, Mr Batten said.

Charges against two men came after police saw a group of men outside a bank at Merrylands, in Sydney's west, about 2pm yesterday exchanging cash. Three of them allegedly left in a car, which police stopped a short time later.

Two of the men, aged 20 and 18, were allegedly found in possession of cash obtained by using a faulty ATM. The elder man was refused bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court tomorrow and the teenager will  appear on March 23.

The technical glitch was repaired by about 5.30pm yesterday.

Detective Superintendent Col Dyson, Commander of the State Crime Command’s Fraud Squad, said on Sky News this morning that people should make arrangements with their bank to return the excess cash.

He said once customers realised they were not entitled to the money they had been dispensed, "technically they have committed a fraud and it's a 10-year offence".

Detective Superintendent Dyson added that tracking down such people would not be hard as they would have used their cards to withdraw the cash, the Commonwealth Bank would have records of every transaction and there were surveillance cameras at every ATM.
