Why did Julia said no tax carbon and then changed her mind? My speculation and analysis in addition to yours.
1. Nov 2009m News Corp hacked the climate scientists' email and artificially created controversy

Using this as a wedge and with the concerted fear and smear campaign by the Murdoch press turned large percentage of population to loose faith in the scientists and turn the tide of opinion against climate change.
2. Aug 2010, Australian election. In order to win the votes of the misinformed public. Julia Gillard promised no carbon tax. The election resulted in stalemate which needed the Greens and independent to broken. The greens agree to the coalition, but forced the Labour government to go back to their promise on carbon tax.
3. Feb 2011, afters near 2 years of investigation. The scientists involved in climategate were cleared of any wrong doing

Unfortunately the Murdoch media has been all but silent on this VERY important news and continue their climate change denial campaign. The public were none the wiser. However, the government knows the scientists were right and climate change is real and they have to do something about it. whether the public support it or not.
So here we are, with a government who wanted to do the right thing and a general populace poisoned by fear and ignorance brainwashed by the Murdoch press and allies. |
