High School, VCE and U.S. Universities Workshop

Presenter: Max Fan, Harvard College (English Literature and Pure Mathematics), Dux of Scotch College in 2021
Time: 11th of January 2025 (Saturday)
Location: Hawthorn Library (584 Glenferrie Road)
Target Audience: All Students and Parents with students in High School.
Fee: $300 per head/family. One payment for the entire day.

This workshop has three aims:
1.        to posit a philosophy of education and learning that prepares students for upper school (years 10, 11, 12)
2.        to explain the mechanics and strategy of VCE, with particular emphasis on English—its only mandatory subject
3.        to offer guidance for applications to universities in the United States As such,

these three portions will take place in discrete times:
9:00-9:30am         New Perspectives on Education: What is the role of education in the modern economy? What is the purpose of assessment? How do you make the most of high school? Differentiating intelligence and discipline, talent and ability, etc.

9:30-10:30am         General VCE Strategy: subject selection, differentiating skills and knowledge, strategies for effective study, balancing life and work
10:30-12:00pm (might drag a little longer)         Writing Workshop: We will workshop pieces of writing, targeting key skills required for the VCE as well as college application essays. Particular attention is paid to concision, clarity, and efficiency. The goal is to write fast and well.

12:00-3:30pm         Lunch: Find lunch somewhere along Glenferrie Road. Take a break. Enjoy the sun.

3:00-4:00pm         U.S. Universities for Parents: Is the United States right for your child? Is the political situation okay? What does an American university offer? How much will it cost? This section will be conducted in a mix of Chinese and English.

4:00-5:00pm         U.S. Universities for Students: Why go to the United States?
What do you need to do, and by what time? Will it disrupt your VCE? What opportunities are available in the U.S. that are not available here? What do U.S. universities look for? This section will be conducted solely in English.
