12-year-old feared taken by croc

Three children swimming with a 12-year-old girl in a Northern Territory lagoon told police they saw a crocodile tail "slap the water" yesterday before their friend went under.
The girl, from Lambells Lagoon south-east of Darwin, has not been seen since 5.30pm when she was swimming with three other children at Black Jungle swamp, a popular local swimming spot north of the town.
Police believed a crocodile took the 12-year-old after the children said they saw her struggling in the water.
"As the others swam towards her, one saw a crocodile tail slap the water near the girl and she's gone under the surface and was not seen again," duty Superintendent Rob Farmer said.
The children ran to get help at a nearby house and a parent of one of the children began looking for the girl, Superintendent Farmer said.
They called police, who searched until 9pm last night. Heavy rain and the threat of another crocodile attack forced them to stop.
"Our members were wading through waist-deep water and thick reeds and heavy rain and once darkness fell it was deemed too dangerous to be going through that sort of terrain if there were crocs in there," Superintendent Farmer said.
A crocodile catcher from Parks and Wildlife helped police when the search resumed this morning.
"Hopefully the water levels have dropped enough that we might be able to actually find something," Superintendent Farmer said.
The girl was described as Caucasian, with black, straight, shoulder-length hair and was wearing brown board shorts and a green-and-blue bikini top when she disappeared.
Lambells Lagoon is about an hour's drive south-east of Darwin. Police advised the public to avoid the area for safety reasons.
Last month, a crocodile took five-year-old Jeremy Doble after he followed his dog into the Daintree River in far north Queensland.
Jeremy was playing with the dog and his seven-year-old brother, Ryan, at the time. Ryan told police he saw a crocodile in the water moments after his brother disappeared in the water. |
