The jury were told they will hear evidence and secret recordings of conversations between a prisoner known as Witness A and Xie, who were in adjoining cells in Long Bay jail between July 2011 and February 2013.
Mr Tedeschi said Witness A approached police, and has “received a substantial reduction in sentence” for his evidence and agreeing for the recordings to took place but also “took a terrible risk” in helping the investigation.
The jury heard 21 conversations will be used in the Crown case, some which were described in letters Witness A sent to the officer in charge of the murder investigation.
“The accused admitted to Witness A that he had purchased a hammer at a two dollar shop. that only had dummy cameras,” Mr Tedeschi said.
“(The accused told the prisoner) he knew where the hammer had been disposed of or hidden, and that he still had access to it and that it was still available to be obtained on the outside.”
The jury also heard Xie told Witness A he had “martial arts training” and demonstrated on his prison wing friend “a pressure point on the neck” which enabled him to easily exercise control over the five victims. |
