Katia's English
Dear Ruth,
I have a daughter, Katia, who will be three in two months. We came from Russia to the USA about 7 years ago, and my English and pronunciations are far from perfect. We speak Russian at home and English outside. Although I read and sing to her in both languages, it is obvious that her Russian is much better than her English.
She attended day care for three months, and her English improved dramatically. Unfortunately she also got two ear infections there, and I have decided to drop the day care.
I want her to be fluent, diverse, and sophisticated in English. She is interested, and tries to sing, to speak, and to pretend that she is reading in English. How can I help her? Would you recommend Earobics, phonics, or anything else?
E.R.
Dear E.R.,
It sounds as though Katia is learning well. It is wonderful that she is growing up bilingual. But you are correct: in order for her to learn excellent English, she needs excellent models.
You can supplement her English at home with audio and video tapes. Select high-quality children's songs, stories and motion pictures. Start with short, simple ones, let her listen or watch them again and again, and be available to explain what she may not understand. Do not be surprised if she eventually memorizes large segments of a favorite movie!
Katia needs daily interaction in English as well. You may be more comfortable with a parent-cooperative preschool or a mother-child program, where sick children are more likely to be left at home and parents are available to wipe noses and wash hands.
When Katia is four years old, she--like most children--could benefit from the Earobics auditory training activities, available for home computer at a modest cost.
Best Wishes,
Ruth Alice Jurey, M.S.
