'Good bloke' dead after savage attack by mob

WITH his acquired taste for pavlova and dogged determination to bring his English up to speed, Zhongjun Cao sought to fit in. He did more than that. Recently promoted and "universally liked", Dr Cao was a good and gentle bloke with a great future that evaporated yesterday afternoon.
His death is now the focus of a murder investigation.
For five days, he had lingered in Royal Melbourne Hospital, victim of a gutless, merciless bashing that lasted less than a minute and saw him kicked and thrown through the air like a rag doll.
He never regained consciousness.
Up to seven men took part in the attack. They are thought to be in their early 20s, a multicultural mob, apparently. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne Woltsche, of the homicide squad, said a witness reported seeing a Caucasian and an Asian face. Beyond that, details are slim.
It happened so quickly, just north of a little park that runs between Empire and Eldridge streets in Footscray. It was 10.45pm on Tuesday. It's believed that Dr Cao was walking home from a long day at Victoria University.
He was wearing a maroon long-sleeved business shirt with a brown and blue top underneath, smart black jeans with a black belt and brown shoes. "The attack was very quick and it was severe … loud enough to wake up the witness," Sergeant Woltsche said. "It went on for a period of about a minute."
It took a couple of days for police to identify the researcher in mathematics education, the teacher to whom struggling overseas students turned to for a leg-up in their studies.
His family home was in Adelaide. His wife, also an academic, remained in South Australia for work reasons. She was at his bedside holding vigil when he died. Their teenage daughter likewise.
Dr Cao, 41, wasn't a big man, about 170 centimetres tall and slightly built. But according to Roger Gabb, he had a big heart.
"He was a very gentle man. Somebody who was unfailingly helpful and friendly and universally liked."
Professor Gabb said Dr Cao first joined his department, the Post-compulsory Education Centre (PEC) at Victoria University, in 2005 as a research assistant. After gaining his PhD in mathematics education, he was recently promoted to research fellow.
Colleagues remember him as a man who deeply missed his family and always looked forward to visiting them in Adelaide.
A Chinese-born permanent resident, Dr Cao is also remembered for studying Australian cultural life so he could be a part of it — and for diligently improving his English so that he could hold his own as a public speaker.
Sergeant Woltsche said that the attack on Dr Cao was unprovoked and senseless. Police are waiting for a number of witnesses who have anonymously identified themselves to come forward.
